Bed & Breakfast accommodation (Southport)

The Jetty House was built as a home for the timber mill owner and his family in 1875 and was the company store, single men’s mess, bakery and generally the centre of life in the area at the time. The renovation has aimed to uncover and retain the timber construction and the original working house feel. Accommodation is in the house in up to 4 spacious rooms with room for up to 8 adults +children, there are two lounge areas and two bathrooms. Generally smaller parties have one bathroom to themselves and share the lounge areas with other guests.

The tarriff includes afternoon tea or coffee with home-baked brownies on arrival (and daily) and a cooked breakfast served on the verandah overlooking the bay in fine weather and next to an open fire on cool mornings. Evening meals can be obtained at the Tavern just up the road, which serves a good range of pub food at reasonable rates and in Dover, 19 km away, there is another pub and a wood-fired pizza restaurent.For lunch, there is a cafe at the Hastings Thermal Springs and a German bakery and well provisioned deli in Dover and we have a fridge available for storing picnic provisions. I can cook an evening meal of Atlantic Salmon, veggies and salad with desert for $20 /head by arrangement.

As well as providing a good place to relax in front of an open fire or on a sunny verandah, the Jetty House is ideal for beachcombers, bird-watchers, and bush walkers, experienced and otherwise, who wish to explore our rain forests, beautiful white beaches and mountains. Southport is a great base for exploring the far South. To begin with, across the road we have one of the white sand beaches for which the Southwest Wilderness is famous. About 15 minutes drive brings you to the Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs (at 28 degrees all year round, Don't forget your bathers!), which are well worth a visit, and the visitors centre includes a display of early activities in the area. About 30 km south you come to the end of the road in Australia, Cockle Creek, the start of a couple of walks, one into the World Heritage Area to Southeast Bay gives a good view of Australia's Southernmost point and the Southern Ocean and is about 4 hours return.

On the way down from Hobart and back take time to visit the Hartz Mountains National Park and the Air Walk (follow the signs from Geeveston) or meander through the wine growing areas around Huonville, Cygnet and Kettering and enjoy the wonderful coastal scenery of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.

We are easy to find as Southport is very small and we are on the right just before the jetty. From Hobart follow the A6 to Huonville and then follow the signs to Southport via Geeveston and Dover.
