Cabin accommodation (Eleebana)

Once you arrive and see the “Ducks Cross Here” sign on the road outside the property, it’s obvious why the name of this property was a foregone conclusion. Sure enough, the car ahead has slowed to a halt while a couple of wood duck waddle across Burton rd

This unique new eco-resort is set in pretty bushland just two minutes from Lake Macquarie and 10 minutes from Redhead Beach. At the heart of the resort is Quackers steak and seafood restaurant. Winding pathways, such as Duckdown Lane, lead to the cabins, each nestled in its own cottage garden. Eider, Teal, Wood Duck, Muscovy and Mallard are some of the eight. The Manor of Ducks Crossing, which is “too grand to be named after a duck” according to host Gaynor, provides honeymoon accommodation.

Gaynor says it was the timber cottages in the historic Hunter towns of Morpeth and Wollombi that provided the inspiration for the decor of the cottages. Lace curtains, polished timber floors, open fires, duck pictures on the walls and beds made with crisp white linen recreate a luxurious sense of yesteryear.

Open plan in design, the cottages have air-conditioning, queen-sized beds, a dining table, kitchenette, comfy sofa and TV/DVD/Internet facilities. There’s a double spa in each cottage and complimentary toiletries, which include duck soap.

Quackers is licenced and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days, along with all-day coffee and tea. It also offers a room-service menu for guests who prefer the romance of a candlelit dinner in their cottage, or breakfast on their private verandah. We did ask the million-dollar question: is duck on the menu? “Absolutely,” says Gaynor, “but not our ducks; they’re specially bred table ducks from Woodville”.

Out and about, take a limo ride to Pokolbin, explore Newcastle, take a dolphin cruise in Nelson Bay or an eco-tour of the Barrington wilderness. Ducks Crossing on Burton is one and a half hours’ drive from Sydney.

Even though Quackers(Duck's Crossing Restaurant) isnt far from the city it felt like we were a million miles away.
The cabins in the eco-resort behind the restaurant looked more like luxurious mini-cottages.
