LOCATION
Homebush West is approx. 15 km. west of the City and 2 km. from the Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush.
Our railway station is Flemington, just a 500 m, 5-minute walk from "Mum's House". Trains run frequently, and it takes 30-40 minutes to get to Circular Quay - $5.20 offpeak return adult fare, $2.60 for children. (Also, 7 buses a day run to and from the station if you don't fancy the Flemington station steps; they will take you to Strathfield where there are ramps and lifts to the platform.)
We're about 10 minutes by private transport from the Olympic Park, or you can walk it in 30 brisk minutes! With public transport use, take the train to one station west from here and change to the Sprint train that takes you directly to Olympic Park (20-30 min.).
We're just 2 stations from Strathfield, a central interchange, from where 1,000 trains a day take you to just about anywhere in NSW.
If you can drive to Homebush Bay Wharf, the Rivercat ferry commute to the City is quite magical. (Or take the train to Parramatta and catch the same ferry from there.)
"Mum's House" is about a 25-minute, $50. drive from the airport by taxi, or if just one person is travelling with little luggage, a $15.00 train ride is a viable option.
Some indicative public transport fares (return, adult, offpeak; children under 4 are free, over 4 up to 16 are approx. half):
Flemo - Central - $4.60
Flemo - all City stations (Museum, St. James, Town Hall, Circular Quay)-$5.20
Flemo - Olympic Park $3.40 (wkly - $21.)
Flemo - Parramatta - $4.20 ($3.00 single)
Flemo - Bondi Beach - $9.20 (includes bus)
Flemo - Manly - $15.60 (includes ferry)
Parramatta - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $7.70 (one-way, any time)
Homebush Bay - Circular Quay (by Rivercat) - $6.40 (one-way, any time)
There are several attractive low-cost fare schemes (eg, $43 weekly Travel Pass that covers trains, buses, ferries within the "green" zone) depending on the time frame and geography of travel you wish to undertake.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
The Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush was the site of the 2000 Olympics, and now is a hub for many sporting, and other, events. There are 2 stadiums, the marvellous Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre (you'll never get the children out of there!), the very busy Sydney Olympic Sports Centre, and the lovely Bicentennial Park, home to thousands of migratory birds, the Golden Orb Spider and other fascinating, harmless Australian wildlife. You can rent bikes (& helmets) there as well.
On the Olympic Park's web site you can see what events are taking place at the Athletic Centre, the Golf Centre, the Sports Hall, the Tennis Centre, and the myriad other venues.
We're just 2 minutes' walk from the Hudson Park Golf Course, an 18-hole, par 60 accredited course, or 5 minutes' drive from Strathfield Golf Club, which is par 71.
Lollipop's Playland and Cafe, for the littlies, is a 5-minute drive away.
Rosehill Race Track is a 15-minute drive away, while shopping centres, cinemas, and houses of worship are within 15 minutes' transport.
Cook's River Cycleway, Rookwood Necropolis (one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian cemetery in the world)and Paddy's Flemington Market are all nearby.
One of Sydney's biggest and best designer clothing/homewares disposal complexes, Direct Factory Outlet (DFO), is near Olympic Park, and can be reached by car or bus.
Homebush West has many Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants and a bottle shop (and a recently-opened Sri Lankan Take-Away). Just 2 suburbs west is wonderful Turkish food, and 1 suburb east are Sri Lankan and Indian restaurants.
Amazingly, considering the low tariff and comfortable accommodation, we're no more than 40 minutes from Sydney's downtown, with all its exciting sights and events, like the Opera House and the Harbour.

My month's placement as a student nurse at Strathfield Private (Hospital) has flown. It's been hard being away from my home 'out west' but this wonderful little house has made me feel much less homesick. Thanks heaps Anna for your friendliness and attention to detail and for putting the outside light on for me when I was out late. S.E., Dubbo, 11/07

We have spent the last 8 days here ..and have enjoyed every minute of it, everything we require and so very clean. We have loved the little garden and the birds are truly amazing. During the time we have been here we did not have a car but it has been so easy on the trains and ferries; it's definitely better without one. Some of the highlights of our time here were the Blue Mountains (by train), Riverboat Postman, Chinese Tea Gardens, Parramatta Rivercat trip, Botanical Gardens, and many more. P & MC, Kent, UK, 1/07
What a lovely stay, so friendly and hospitable and with everything you could need to make it a real home away from home. Also a wonderful assortment of eating houses just around the corner and many in nearby suburbs.
We hope to spend more relaxing time with "Mum" in future holidays in Sydney. T & E E, Narrandera, 10/06
What a fabulous start to our new life "Down Under". The house is so welcoming and homely, it was fabulous to arrive to after our long journey from the U.K. Our daughter has loved seeing the birds every day and playing in the garden. We have enjoyed exploring Flemington and Strathfield and the Olympic site.
Thanks so much for being such a thoughtful hostess and making our first few weeks in Sydney so enjoyable.
